HOW TO PLAN YOUR BRECKENRIDGE ELOPEMENT
STEP - BY - STEP
Is this your first time trying to plan an elopement? Don’t worry- as a Breckenridge photographer, I have quite a few of these under our belt and I'm here to help you through the whole process! Here’s a step by step guide on how to elope in Breckenridge, Colorado:
I. Choose a season
Breckenridge is a year around destination; having a big winter culture and amazing summer weather, every season will be different! Are you looking for the perfect winter wonderland destination, or you prefer running amidst wildflowers? It's all about the feeling you want to have on your elopement day.
II. HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER
Most couples hire me before they start planning anything! The reason for this is because I help my couples with logistics such as choosing the right date, which location(s) are perfect for them, navigating permits, finding local vendors, etc. You don’t have to do it all yourself, I'm here to help you.
III. choose your location
After you’ve set a date with me you’ll gain access to my exclusive Breckenridge location guide. You’ll easily be able to see which location(s) perfectly fit what you’re looking for and have all the info you’ll need to obtain any reservations or permits needed.
IV. plan the details
Next, you’ll book your lodging, transportation and any additional vendors such as hair and makeup, a florist, officiant, etc. (don’t worry, I’ll send you ideas for all of these). I'll collaborate on a timeline to fit in all the locations and activities you want while getting the best photos throughout the day! You’ll also need to pick up your marriage license prior to the wedding.
What is the best time of year to get married in Colorado?
Spring (April - May): Quiet season with fewer tourists. Snow may linger at higher elevations, but lower trails start to bloom.
Summer (June - August): Wildflowers bloom, and the mountain landscapes are lush and green. Great for couples who love hiking or outdoor activities.
Fall (September - November): Golden aspen trees create vibrant backdrops for elopement photos. Early fall often brings warm, sunny days with crisp air.
Winter (December - March): Snow-covered peaks create a magical winter wonderland. Ideal for couples who love skiing or want to embrace the snowy landscape.
Are permits required for elopements in breckenridge?
The answer depends on where you plan to get married and how many guests will you have. Many popular ceremony locations in and around Breckenridge require either a reservation, permit, or venue rental fee. For example, Sapphire Point requires a reservation through Recreation.gov, while locations such as Windy Point Campground, Breckenridge Nordic Center, and many private venues have their own reservation and permit requirements.
If you're planning a truly intimate elopement on public land with no setup, chairs, arches, or large guest count, a special permit may not always be required with your group size is less than 20 people.
Because permit requirements can change, I always recommend checking with the appropriate land manager or venue before finalizing your plans. As a Breckenridge wedding photographer, I help my couples navigate these logistics and choose locations that fit their vision while ensuring everything is planned legally and responsibly.
How many hours of wedding photography do I need for my elopement?
It depends entirely on the experience you want to create. While some couples only need 3 to 4 hours to document their ceremony and a few portraits, many of my couples choose 4 to 6 hours of coverage to fully capture their day without feeling rushed.
If you're planning a simple ceremony with a few family members, 3 hours is often plenty of time for the ceremony, family portraits, and couple portraits.
However, if you're dreaming of a more adventurous experience—getting ready photos, exploring multiple locations, hiking to a mountain overlook, sharing a private picnic, or celebrating with family afterward at a small reception 4 to 6 hours allows your story to unfold naturally.
The beauty of an elopement is that it isn't about fitting your day into a timeline; it's about creating an experience that feels meaningful to you. Rather than asking how many hours you need, I encourage couples to think about what moments they want to remember.
